Welcome to Year 4 with Mrs Hunka
Year 4 is a fantastic year as we embed our learning from earlier in the school and develop our independence and reasoning further. We have a strong focus on being a team and working to support each other across the curriculum and even at playtimes, which helps shoe our golden rule of ‘Love one another’. We always try our best and never give up. We will explore, discover and experience many new things in our positive learning environment. We strive to do better and take pride in our learning. Often we celebrate our successes and then challenge ourselves on the next step. This is particularly true as we go swimming for a term and learn brass throughout the year thanks to the Music Hub. What great enrichment and new skills that are developed!
In September, we focus on Nottingham and Robin Hood, getting know stories and places quite local to us. Later in the year, we study worldwide topics such as The Ancient Greeks and The Romans. We read and learn, picking out information and look for bias. We develop our sense of chronology with timelines and add events to it as we learn more. With our geography and history skills developing, we could be experts in later life.
We study scientists, teeth and the human digestion system, electricity, sound and habitats, all helping us to be scientists in the future.
Often our learning overlaps, so designing and building a structure in Design Technology could easily be linked with a Roman or Grecian temple. In making these links between subjects, we reinforce our learning and so we remember more.
In June we get a chance to show how well we know our multiplication facts with the government multiplication check. It is a computer based timed assessment.
Year Four work in a variety of ways: individually, paired work, small group work or even whole class. We mix and match our work to get the best out of it and to do as well as we can. We are always positive and hard working.
For more information on the topics and what is being taught, please see the Year 4 Curriculum Overview and planning pages.
Homework is given out on Thursdays and collected in on Wednesdays to reinforce learning. It is reading, learning multiplication tables, using Mathletics and Times Table Rockstars. It is also spellings which are tested on Wednesdays.
