Year 4

We are the Fantastic Fours!

Welcome back to the new academic year! We hope you all had a wonderful summer and are ready start learning. This year Mrs. Hunka will be your teacher and I am looking forward to getting to know you all better and working together with parents/guardians to help children progress over the coming year.

During our time in Year 4, we will explore, discover and experience new things, work hard together to create a positive and helpful learning environment, support one another and most importantly enjoy our learning. We will always take pride in our learning and strive to do our best, learn from mistakes and work together to reach our full potential and to fulfil our learning goals we will set at the beginning of the year.

In Year 4 we strive to include everyone and follow our golden rule ‘Love one another’. We care for each other, respect each other, listen to one another and always try our best. We work together as a team and celebrate each other’s successes. In our classroom, you will always find us further developing our learning and challenging ourselves.

In English this year, we will be building on skills learnt in Year 3 and improving them further in line with Year 4 expectations. We will be focusing on writing for different purposes based on our focus texts. This will include carefully planning, drafting, editing and rewriting; whilst also extending our vocabulary to further develop our writing. We will also be regularly practicing our handwriting to become more fluent with our handwriting style and to apply this in each piece of work.

In Maths, we will be building on prior knowledge and will be encouraged to think more deeply through reasoning and problem solving. Times tables are fundamental in Year 4, therefore great emphasis is put on practice and testing. In Year 4 it is key for children to be able to count in multiples of 6,7 and 9 in addition to those studied in Year 3.

For more information on topic information or Year 4 expectations please refer to the curriculum maps and parent leaflet attached below.

Homework is set weekly to reinforce our learning at home, therefore it is important that homework is completed on a weekly basis. Homework includes a reading activity, spellings, times tables and division facts in addition to a maths or English piece. For more information, please see your child’s homework folder. I will also encourage for your child to be reading for approximately 10 minutes each night, please ensure you are signing your child’s reading diary regularly.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me and we can arrange for a time where we can discuss any queries.

We are very much looking forward to this year and all the exciting challenges and fun learning ahead!
