OPAL: Outdoor Play and Learning at St Margaret Clitherow Academy
At St Margaret Clitherow Academy, we recognise that play is a vital part of childhood — a time when children learn, explore, create and grow. As part of our commitment to nurturing the whole child, we are proud to be an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) school, dedicated to making playtimes joyful, inclusive and meaningful for every pupil.
What is OPAL?
OPAL is a nationally recognised programme that supports schools in developing high-quality play opportunities for all children. It encourages imaginative, active and adventurous play, promoting pupils’ physical health, emotional wellbeing and social development.
Why OPAL?
Play is far more than simply having fun — it is essential to children’s development. Through play, children build confidence, resilience and independence. They learn to collaborate, solve problems, take risks and develop creativity.
At St Margaret Clitherow, we recognise that play is an essential part of learning. In fact, children spend up to one fifth of their time in school playing, and we believe this time should be valued and developed just as carefully as any other aspect of the curriculum.
Article 31 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child states that every child has the right to rest, relax, play and take part in cultural and creative activities. We fully embrace this principle and are committed to ensuring every child has access to high-quality play experiences.
What does OPAL look like at St Margaret Clitherow?
Our playtimes are rich, varied and designed to meet the needs of all children. Opportunities include:
- Loose parts play with tyres, crates, fabric and other open-ended materials
- Mud kitchens, sand and water play areas
- Den-building, construction and creative play spaces
- Opportunities for climbing, digging and exploring the natural environment
- Quiet areas for drawing, reading and reflection
These experiences allow children to develop independence, imagination and important social skills in a safe and well-supported environment.
Our Vision
At St Margaret Clitherow Academy, our mission calls us to be a loving, caring and serving Catholic community where every child can thrive personally, academically and spiritually. OPAL plays an important role in this by supporting children’s wellbeing, relationships and confidence.
We are committed to developing our outdoor environment over time so that it reflects the wide range of play experiences children need and enjoy. Our aim is that every child experiences joyful, purposeful play every day, recognising that play is not a break from learning, but a vital and enriching part of school life.
